Band students Grace Edler, Maggie Bass, Collin Mullett, Rachel McDuffey, Chance

Brewer, and Gracie Dall competed in the IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest at Centralia High

School on March 8.

“Solo and Ensemble is a contest for students who decide to represent their school by

performing individually or in a small group in front of a judge to get a score and ranking,” said

band director Madison Sanker.

There were 19 schools in the Centralia sectional, but only four were in the same class as

Carlyle. Schools in Class C included Carlyle, South Central, Sparta, and Altamont.

Sanker said that the event provided a good opportunity for students to practice playing

individually in front of an audience.

Edler, who is a senior, competed individually for the first time in her high school career

at this event.

“I had fun watching the other members in our band perform their pieces,” said Edler, “I

was also excited to receive the first superior award.”

A first superior award is given to a student who was outstanding in nearly every detail of

their performance.
